Thanks to infrared instruments like MIRI, the James Webb Space Telescope allows us to study some of the oldest and most distant objects in the universe. Oliver Krause, head of the Infrared Space Astronomy Research Group, describes the technical challenges of observing in the infrared, as well as some of the exciting discoveries and record-breaking feats made by JWST during its first year of operations.
